Index analysis

Have you ever created an index on a column with a name like “last_update_date” – or maybe even a function-based index on “trunc(last_update_date)” ?
You can probably guess the purpose of the column from its name – but could you also guess what state that index is going to be in a few weeks after you’ve [...]

Root Cause

There are a few expressions in the industry that irritate me - not necessarily for good reason but simply because they sound like the extremes of pretentiousness and marketing put together.  (Pretentious, moi !)
For example: “root cause analysis”, “holistic methods”  and so on - it’s all those little ways of saying “we’re doing just the same [...]

So now OpenWorld 2008 is over, and San Franciscans rejoice as Howard Street reopens between 3rd and 4th, or at least it will soon.
I missed my Wednesday recap, since we spent Thursday sequestered in that same old conference room in Pleasanton. Not a lot happened for me on Wednesday.

Oracle Open World Day 4 : OBIEE Action Framework, and OBIEE Performance Tuning

I’m just catching up now on my Open World notes, as I’m staying for an extra day to go to Redwood Shores tomorrow for a meeting with the OWB product development team. Wednesday (Day 4) was my first day without any presentations, and with Larry’s keynote during the early afternoon I managed to go to [...]

Real World Performance, Exadata Storage & ACE Session…

Today was a very full day…
Real-World Database Performance Techniques and Methods
Real-World Database Performance Roundtable
I went to the primer session on Tuesday and both sessions today. I don’t think there was anything particularly new to me here, but listening to the experiences of a team like that helps you crystallize things in your mind. The three [...]

Oracle Exadata Storage Server. Part III. A “FAQ” is born.

I expected Oracle Exadata Storage Server to make an instant splash, but the blogosphere has really taken off like a rocket with the topic. Unfortunately there is already quite a bit of misinformation out there. I’d like to approach this with routine quasi-frequently asked question posts. When I find misinformation, I’ll make a blog update. [...]
