Fedora 9 (F9) Installation

This article provides a pictorial guide for performing a basic server installation of Fedora 9 (F9).

  1. Boot from the CD or DVD. At the boot screen, press the "Enter" key.

  2. Skip the media test by tabbing to the "Skip" button and pressing the "Enter" key.

  3. Click the "Next" button on the welcome screen.

  4. Select the appropriate language, then click the "Next" button.

  5. Select the appropriate keyboard, then click the "Next" button.

  6. Click the "Yes" button on the warning dialog.

  7. If you are using DHCP to configure your network settings, then ignore the next three screens and click the "Next" button. Otherwise, highlight the "eth0" interface and click the "Edit" button.

  8. Enter the appropriate IP address and subnet mask, then click the "OK" button.

  9. Enter the appropriate hostname, gateway and DNS information, then click the "Next" button.

  10. Select the appropriate timezone by clicking on the nearest city on the map, then click the "Next" button.

  11. Enter the root password, then click the "Next" button.

  12. Uncheck the "Encrypt system" option and check the "Review and modify partitioning layout" option, then click the "Next" button.

  13. The current partitioning layout is presented.

  14. Highlight the "/" mount point, then click the "Edit" button. This displays the Volume Group dialog.

  15. Highlight the "/" logical volume, then click the "Edit" button. Enter the appropriate size for the logical volume, then click the "OK" button.

  16. Highlight the swap logical volume, then click the "Edit" button. Enter the appropriate size for the logical volume, then click the "OK" button. For Oracle installations it's a good idea to use about 2Gig (2048) of swap.

  17. Check the volume group is configured correctly, then click the "OK" button.

  18. If you are happy with the partitioning layout, click the "Next" button.

  19. Click the "Write changes to disk" button on the confirmation dialog.

  20. Accept the default boot loader settings by clicking the "Next" button.

  21. Check the "Cutomize now" option, then click the "Next" button.

  22. Select the appropriate package groups, then click the "Next" button.

  23. Wait while the installation completes.

  24. Click the "Reboot" button.

  25. Once the reboot has completed, click the "Forward" button on the welcome screen.

  26. Accept the license agreement by clicking the "Forward" button.

  27. Create any required users, then click the "Finish" button. Accept any warnings and the reboot warning message.

  28. Set the appropriate date-time information, then click the "Forward" button.

  29. Decide if you want to send a hardware profile to the Fedora project, then click the "Forward" button.

  30. When the system has stated, you are presented with the login screen.

  31. After you've logged in, you are are presented with the default Fedora desktop.
