Nexus 4 : Update from LG over broken back panel…

I just got off the phone to LG about this piece of crap Nexus 4 phone. Their response is physical damage is not their responsibility, so I will have to pay for a repair. I suggested that designing a phone that will shatter when it is placed on a room temperature surface (yes, that really has happened to people) constitutes a design flaw and they should repair it for free. After much whining on my part their stance is unchanged at this time. I guess if enough people contact them to complain they will have to take responsibility…. Maybe…

So if you end up getting one of these super-fragile phones, please save yourself a lot of grief and buy a case that covers the back completely. It’s the only way you are going to make it past a week without breaking it.

If the back panel does shatter, you have to phone LG. They will send you a letter telling you where to send your phone to get a quote for the repair. If you accept the quote they will fix it and send it back to you. If you don’t accept the quote they will charge to £20 and send the phone back to you. Sounds like something in excess of a week without a phone to me and no idea of what you are going to be charged before you do it. 🙁

I think I’m just going to accept the fact it is broken and cover it with a case to stop little shards of glass digging into my hand. Once Google and LG are shamed into admitting this design is crap, maybe I will get it repaired for free.

  1. How did it break? I’m expecting mine to break sooner rather than later. Great phone, questionable design. Given the supply issues, I wouldn’t expect much from LG for a while.

  2. @Jake : It was face up in a gym locker. When I opened the locker something fell on the front. I quickly check it to see if it had smashed, but it was fine. A few minutes later I noticed the back was smashed. Seems the front is pretty strong, but the back sucks ass.

    Cheers

  3. Bummer. Must be related to impact transfer to the smaller back piece. Too much glass is a bad idea, see iPhone 4S.

  4. Hi, my Nexus 4 back glass shattered spontaneously after 3 mtns. It’s never been dropped before. Google sent me to LG. LG sent me back to Google. Both of the “supports” were sorry but refused to take responsibility for mechanical, physical or cosmetic damage.

    How bloody pathetic it is…

  5. Mine just broke too, and i didn’t drop it. I just woke up and looked at the back of my phone and saw a huge crack under the nexus logo. I haven’t dropped or phisicaly stressed the phone in any way. The phone is only 4 days old and i have taken good care of it.

  6. I have the same issue that I guessed was a fluke insident, but I guess not! Place the Nexus 4 on the table in front of me and the back started to crack! Bought the phone in March, first one died would not charge, then finally got this one in April, and the back is already shattered from putting it down! POS
