Create Shared Disks using VirtualBox running on Win7

Postby sophiali » Sat Apr 07, 2012 7:39 pm

Hi,

I am trying to setup 11gR2 RAC on Linux using VirtualBox on my 64bit PC running on Win7. I am following the document "Oracle Database 11g Release 2 RAC On Linux Using VirtualBox". However, this document is for VituralBox installed on a Linux server, not on Win7. So when I get into the point of "Create Shared Disks", I can't follow the steps which are using Unix command on the host server, where my host server is Win7.

Is there any other relevent document there for VirtualBox running on Win7? How should I preceed?

thanks,
Sophia Li

Hi.

I never use Windows as a host, but I believe all the VBoxManage commands are the same regardless of the OS. So the only bit that is Windows-specific is.

Code: Select all
$ mkdir -p $HOME/VirtualBox\ VMs/harddisks
$ cd $HOME/VirtualBox\ VMs/harddisks

This is just making a directory for holding the virtual disks, so you can put this anywhere on the host PC.

All the other commands after this point are done within the VM, so they are Linux commands you will be running.

Cheers

if you are using vitual box with Chinese language

VBoxManage storageattach ol6-112-rac1 --storagectl "SATA Controller" --port 1 --device 0 --type hdd --medium asm1.vdi --mtype shareable
should be
VBoxManage storageattach ol6-112-rac1 --storagectl "SATA 控制器" --port 1 --device 0 --type hdd --medium asm1.vdi --mtype shareable

use the complete command path.
For me it is:
Code: Select all
c:> "c:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxManage.exe" storageattach ...

or you can add the path to your PATH environment variable

Hi.

Certainly, if the problem is you don't see the utility, it is likely to be a PATH issue.

You are attaching to a named controller, so you have to make sure you specify the correct controller name. :)
