OCA prep

Postby Sunbest » Sun Nov 01, 2009 3:48 pm

Hi,
I noticed there are a lot of talented oracle specialists in this forum and I will like to get where you are which is why I am here to ask you some questions. I just recently finished my MS but I do not have any work experience in Oracle.

I’m a windows type of guy, do I have to be an expert in Linux to become Oracle DBA?

I found these two below books on amazon, which one would you recommend that will help me well in studying for the OCA exam? The first book has OCP book with it, I’m not worry about that for now. My main concern is the OCA.
OCP: Oracle Database 11g Administrator Certified Professional Certification Kit: (1Z0-051, 1Z0-052, and 1Z0-053) (Paperback)
By Biju Thomas
OCA Oracle Database 11g: Administration I Exam Guide (Exam 1Z0-052) by John Watson

Lastly, what book would you recommend me to buy on Linux that will really help me understand it better and be able to use it well with Oracle?
If you have anymore resources, pls feel free to share.
Thanks
Sunday

Hi.

I'm really not sure what to recommend regarding Linux. I just started playing with it a few years ago and picked it up over time. Perhaps if you visit a Linux forum you will get a resonable answer.

Regarding the OCP, the Sybex books seem to get a consistently good reaction. It works out cheaper if you order the certification kit like this:

Thanks Mr. Tim. Going back to my first question, I rather use Oracle on windows platform than Linux. In your opinion, do you think it will benefit me in the long run or it will be a wise decision by just focusing on Windows/Oracle rather than Linux/Oracle together? I don’t want to overload myself by trying to be expert in Windows server and Linux and ended up loosing interest.

Hi.

From an Oracle perspective it doesn't matter which operating system you run on. When you get into industry you will find the majority of the databases running on UNIX and Linux. As a result, you really need to get to grips with a UNIX style OS, like Linux.
