Oracle 9i OCP

Dear Tim,

I m sorry if i m posting my question through like this.

As i m very new to Oracle-Base forums and dont know where/how to post my questions. I apologize.

I have recently (last week) completed my Oracle 9i OCP and want to upgrade.
Which version shall i upgrade to now? 10g or 11i.
Please also tell me the appropriate exam number to upgrade ?

My background is I was doin programming in Foxpro, VB & Access and then decided to jump towards Oracle Database Ceritification (due to its huge demand, good pay and better future prospects)


I have some queries and need advise:-
- Shall i do Oracle 9i Developer also? Because they say it goes parallel with a DBA
- i came to know that Oracle 9i will be obselete by end of next year? Is this true?

- How shall i proceed further after completing my OCP ?

- Where/whom shall i approach for getting working experience as i m a fresher now ?

- Can you advise me some good books/good authors for practical examples & study?

- Now i have gained the knowledge but no practical/live experiences on a database?
What shall i do for this?

Hi.

I've split your post off into its own thread and placed it in the certification forum. I think this is the most approrpiate place.

When considering certification options, I always say you should certify in a technology you are likely to use. There is no point in doing the certification in developer if you don't plan on being a developer!

Likewise with database versions. If you think you will use 10g a lot, then you should certify in 10g. If not, then jump straight to 11g. This page shows you to the upgrade options:

That site should be the first place you look for exam information.

The desupport notices will appear at least 6 months before the exam is desupported. The 9i track is still present on the website, which means there is no desupport notice yet:

If I remember correctly, the 9i product was desupported in 2007, but it is under extended support for some time provided you pay the extended support fee. You will have to check with Oracle to get specific dates. When releases are desupported and when they stop being used are not the same thing. There are still people out there using Oracle 5, 6, 7 etc.

What you do after OCP is totally up to you. Personally, I think your goal should be to get some experience. Few employers will hire on the strength of certification allone. The quote, "due to its huge demand, good pay and better future prospects", is not necessarily the case in the current economic crisis. I suggest you try to find employers in your area that use Oracle and approach them about work. I worked for free for a time to get my first job. I was later give a job. That's an option, but it's not good financially.

Dear Tim,


Please advise me good books/good authors to refer for Oracle 9i DBA.

I need books where there are examples, demonstrations and real time exercises where i can start practise. I am trying to find a job as Junior DBA.

I have got my OCA Certificate and now waiting to receive my OCP Certificate so i can fire up my search for a DBA job. Your last response seems to be me digestable that i have to start working somewhere free (without salary) or very low salary to gain experience -Thanks !!

Hi.

It's very hard to recommend books for individual subjects. Personally, I would suggest you pick a subject area and read the Oracle manual for that area and try to practice the things it says. You will learn a lot more this way than following blindly. There are plenty of sites like mine where you can see quick how-to articles to help you along your path.

- What do you mean by Manual? Is it the Oracle Concepts?
- Where/How do i get the Oracle Manual ?
- Is there a major difference between Oracle 9i and 11g ?

Hi.

The information about Oracle is spread over several manuals. You need to search for a specific topic and read all the entries from all the manuals related to that subject. You can get the manuals for all the versions of the database from here:

There are lots of differences between Oracle 9i and Oracle 11g, so read the manuals for the version you are using, or most likely to use. The more time you spend reading the manuals, the better you will get at Oracle.
