Hi forum,
I bought McGrawHill "SQL Fundamentals I" and found out that there is a companion cd for the exam questions but no cd
for creating the sample database, sample schemas, ... ! Is this CD downloadable on the ORACLE site ?

When you create a database (from the installer or the DBCA), there is an option to include the sample schemas. Check that option an you will be good to go.

I just downloaded oracle express edition, but cannot open it. Which program is needed for installation ?
Does anyone know whether the express edition contains these examples schemes ?

Oracle XE does come with sample schema. See:

Regarding the installation, the downloads are self installing. For Windows it is an exe you run. For Linux it is a package you install. You don't need an additional piece of software to install it.

Hi Tim,
so far I nearly lost one week for nothing. Of course OracleXE is an .exe file but it is downloaded without the .exe ending.
No matter. I installed it in the meantime. But it makes me crazy and angry. the hr schema exists; even hr_main.sql .
But oe_*.sql is desperately wanted. the McGraw Hill book "SQL fundamentals I" talk of a companion cd but it cannot be found
anywhere. And the download from ORACLE homepage does not contain this script. The only thing I want to do is to learn this
book. Where can oe_main.sql and its sub-sql scripts be found ?

Hi.

The companion CD refers to the full installation of Oracle, not OracleXE.

Oracle XE is a cut down product with loads of stuff missing that is available for free. If they didn't remove a lot of the stuff it would be as massive as the main product. If you want all the other stuff you need to download the full blown product, which you can use for free as part of the limited development license. Oracle Standard Edition (SE) and Enterprise Edition (EE) are very different beasts to XE.

Regarding your "wasted time", be prepared for many more hours of "wasted time". Oracle is not a simple product and even experienced people spend a lot of time reading the manuals to figure things out.

Certification books are good at getting you started, but they are the tip of the iceberg as far as what you need to know to use Oracle effectively.

of course you are right. I spent 16 years with SAP basis and very often had a look on the ORACLE database, but from the point

I hopefully found the scripts' source code I need and am currently making the scripts. If it works this way, okay. If not I'll buy the
personal edition.

Hi.

There is no need to buy any Oracle software. All of it can be downloaded from OTN. An OTN download comes with a limited development license, which means you can use it for free for practicing Oracle. As long as you don't do any commercial development, you are not breaking any rules. So you can use Enterprise Edition for free in this context.
