Oracle 11.2 Grid deinstall

Hi Tim,

I have an up and running 2 node cluster, but seems Grid was not successful loading files on both nodes. I would like to de-install and then
re-install Grid again to ensure it is installed correctly, before I configure the Enterprise Manager.

Looking around I found that I can deinstall by using a deinstall utility

./deinstall -home /opt/oracle/product/11.2/grid1

However I am unsure what effect this will have on the Cluster or ASM disks that have been configured.
I do not wish to impact the Cluster or Disks, only to remove the Grid environment.

My last question (hopefully an easier one) do I simply rerun the Grid installer to configure Grid again or is there an alternative method?

This is on an AIX 6.1 box (should not make any difference) with Oracle 11.2

As mentioned, Cluster is up and running, ASM working fine and the 2 databases, one on each node are also up and running. I would hope not to effect any of these

Any advice or guidance would be most appreciated

Hi.

Are you talking about the grid control agent, or are you talking about the Gird Infrastructure installation?

If you are talking about the grid control agent, then you can remove this with no problems. If you are talking about removing the GI installations, then you can't, since this is a fundamental part of RAC clustering.

Your post does not make it clear what you are trying to achieve.

Hi Tim,

Basically I cannot get the agent to work and when I compare both nodes, it seems files are missing from a directory on one of the nodes.
So I think I need to remove the agent and then attempt to reconfigure the grid agent, so I can manage the db's and cluster via Enterprise Manager

So it is the grid control agent. Then it is OK for you to uninstall it.

Some of the possible reasons may be :

1) Database may not be up.
2) Database is started setting environment variable ORACLE_HOME with trailing '/'. Reset ORACLE_HOME and bounce the database.

First I attempted to run the installer to remove the agent, but it appears that this was trying to deinstall Grid and that is not what I wanted to do
Then I tried to stop and drop the cluster, with the intention of re-creating the repository and as you can see ran into some errors.

I am trying to remove either Grid, so I can reinstall this again, without affecitng the current cluster, ASM or the oracle instances which are all working fine.

I am hoping to get to the stage where I can do something similar to this:

Hi.

I know I've asked this before, but are you sure it's the grid control agent you are trying to uninstall? You say things like you want to remove the cluster, which is nothing at all to do with the grid control.

If you want to uninstall the grid control agent you can do this by using the agent installer.

$AGENT_HOME/oui/bin/runInstaller.sh

You can then click the deinstall products button...

The following are very different things and you *MUST* use the correct names when asking advice or you will get very different answers...

- Grid Control (GC)- A separate DB, App server installation to run the Grid Control product.
- Grid Infrsatructure (GI) - The combination of Clusterware and ASM used for single instance ASM installations, or RAC.
- DB Control - The locally install Enterprise Manager console that provides a cut down of the GC functionality and is not supported in RAC and Data Guard environments.

The commands you are running have nothing what-so-ever to do with the grid control agent, since you are doing "emctl <command> dbconsole". This command is specifically for the database control, not the grid agent.

This just adds to my confusion about your question. So what are you *really* trying to achieve?

Hi.

In the case of the DB console you can pretty much forget the agent.

The basic troubleshooting can be found here:

Before you work through that, it's worth checking that all your environment variables are set correctly. The error you are getting suggest to me that you've not get your environment set up properly.

Some of the possible reasons may be :

1) Database may not be up.
2) Database is started setting environment variable ORACLE_HOME with trailing '/'. Reset ORACLE_HOME and bounce the database.

For eg. Database is started setting environment variable ORACLE_HOME=/scratch/db/ . Reset ORACLE_HOME=/scratch/db  and bounce the database.


Confirmation that the database is in fact up and running

Hi.

I think this is one for Oracle Support. It seems almost like some of the DB Console software is missing. I figured this was due to a path issue, but that is obviously not the case. Check with support for the next best options.

Now I'm not telling you to do this, but I think I would probably re-download the software and do a new installation over the top of the existing one. That will require database downtime though...

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the reply. Just to clarify before I log a call with Oracle - do you mean a reinstall of the Oracle Grid software?
And if this is the case will it affect my current Cluster configuration? I can have downtime (not an issue) but did not want to jepordise anything already in place

Hi.

Think about it for a second. Which Oracle home do you think I'm talking about? The one where you are running the emctl command from or the other one, that you are not trying to use emctl from?

Note. I doubt this is something Oracle Support would recommend, so do it at your own risk!
