passwordless SSH connectivity works and then fails?

Hello everyone

I am following the following post - on * two * Virtual Box Linux VMs on one laptop (3GB RAM allocated per each Linux 64-bit VM and 2GB left over for the host Windows7 64-bit OS, total laptop RAM 8GB).

I am using Oracle Linux 6.2 (not OL 6.1 as in the article) with UEK kernel and using Oracle 11.2.0.3 64-bit.

I was able to install the 11g R2 Grid/ASM without problems and the passwordless SSH was done from the Oracle Installer (click Setup and click Test) and it worked.

Now I am installing the 11g R2 RAC Database software and when I click Setup the passwordless SSH it returns with Success (after ~20-30 seconds) and then when I click Test and it always fails with INS-06006 error, Passwordless SSH Connectivity Failed and won't allow me to proceed further. Why does the Setup report success? Why did the Grid installation work ok using same SSH and RAC fails now?

Any clues? Shall I set it up SSH manually? Why is SSH setup is so unstable? The Grid/ASM installation worked fine and the RAC software fails on the same step on the same two VMs?

Any pointers on how to set-up SSH manually so that it always works?

A follow up on my own note: (in case it helps anyone in future)

I did this on both nodes to test SSH

ssh node1 date
ssh node2 date

it worked when running on node2 but not on node1, wanted a password (the node i was running oracle installer was node1, the same node where the 11.2 grid installed successfully on earlier)

So, in some desperation and anger, i rebooted the node1 VM and the SSH problem went away after the reboot.

Not happy, what year is this that we still have to reboot the latest version of an enterprize linux O/S to solve such ancient node-to-node security problems.....

If anyone has tips on how to manually configure 100% reliable SSH between two linux nodes please post some pointers, clearly it is a hit and miss affair....

Hi.

I've not had to set up user equivalence manually since it was added to the installer. I've certainly never had to reboot to get it to work. You can see how I used to do it in this article.

It's in the second half of that section, after the networking has been set up.
