ASM database not mounted

Tim,
this is a 11gr2 RAC ASM instance. when RAC is up and an import is loading data to database, I log onto ASM sqlplus / as sysasm, then 'select name from v$database', I got 'ora-01507: database not mounted'.
when I 'select user from dba_users', I got 'ora-01219: database not open: queries allowed on fixed table/views only'.

1. I dont think the ASM instance should be in not mounted status when RAC is up, am I wrong here?
2. As we still can import data to the database, that means ASM diskgroup mounted and worked
3. After I added all 8 nodes to OEM 12cr2 and promoted them, All associated targets like listeners, database instances etc are promoted, but ASM instance in a 'down' status

My question is 'Should ASM instance stay in 'not mounted' or not?' if yes, is there any other reason that OEM can not prompt these ASM instance.

Hi.

The ASM instance is a special type of instance. It does not have data files etc.

The normal mode for the instance is mounted, which means only specific SQL is allowed, like querying *some* v$views. Querying v$database is not relevant for an ASM instance, since it isn't a database. Remember, a single ASM instance can be used to service many databases, so v$database is really irrelevant.

Most os the time, when people have trouble logging in to the ASM instance it is because they are using the wrong environment variable settings. To successfully connect to the ASM instance you need to have the correct setting for ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID. Remember, this is the GI home and ASM SID, not the database settings.

yes, I did have all ASM settings before I connect to ASM instance. thank you for mentioned that to me too.
I just checked the database_status='ACTIVE' from v$instance in ASM instance. so this error should be ignored as you said.

thank you very much, I will check something else to see why OEM 12cr2 dont prompt all these ASM instance target then. All these ASM instance target remain in 'Down' status.
