Install 9i Rel 2 on Windows 2003...

Hi,

We are planning to do the subject installation on WINDOWS 2003 server. I am having hardtime to locate the installation guide for Windows 2003. There are a lot of installation guide for other platform but not for Win 2003.

Any clue? Many thanks for your help!

Hi.

Both Oracle9i (9.2) and Oracle 10g are certified against Windows 2003. The installations on windows are always pretty simple. There are typically no prerequisites to set. Simply put the CD in and go.

On the top right-hand side of this page there is a quick installation guide for windows:

Thanks a lot! The link you just sent me is for 9i Windows 2k.

Q1) I suppose they don't have an installation guide for Windows 2003, right?

Anyway, for Unix, there's ROOT TASKS! ,
Q2) are there any SA TASKS for windows on 9i installation?

Also, I asked our Windows SA regarding the RAID system and capacity of the Win 2003 server. He replied as:

It has 2 mirrored disks for the c: drive and the d: drive is the SAN.
The two disk partitions are the C: (16.9GB) and D: drives (10GB).

Q3) I am not familiar w/ SAN. 10GB is extremely small. I will not be able to do much manual stripping? All the data files have to be in D, 1 of the control file, 1 member of the log groups, and archive logs can go to C, agree?

Q4) Also, it doesn't make whole lot of sense if it only mirrored C drive, as we could afford to lose the software on C but not the data on D.

Hi.

I've not seen a Windows 2003 install guide for 9i, only for 10g, but it is certified so I assume the regular 9i guide will work fine. I've never done anything except put in the CD for a windows install. They are alot simpler than UNIX and Linux installs.

The C drive is mirrored so the OS is safe. The SAN will likely be using some form of RAID so you won't need to do anything in the way of striping. This is hopefully done for you by the SAN.

As far as disk placement goes, if you only see a single drive on your SAN, then you might as well shove all the files in the same directory, like "D:\\oradata\\DBNAME". There is no performance advantage of splitting this directory down. If you had multiple arrays, each with their own drive letter, like D:, E:, F: etc. then there would be a performance advantage in splitting the files apart.

Thanks a lot Tim! You are right about SAN, I was told that if I put all my datafiles on D drive (expandable), chances are it will go to different places on SAN. That way, I don't need to worry about I/O contention, stripping etc...

Currently, the db is small. So I am planning to allocate as follows:

1) all the datafiles in D drive.

2) 1 control file, 1 member of redo log, archive logs, and backup (will go to tape afterward), go to C drive.

What do you think? Please comment...

Thanks Tim! One final question before I kick it off, below is my plan, does it look ok to you?

1) install 9i Rel 2 (9.2.0.1.0) (not sure if I should use DBCA tool or run a script to create the db with a init file ready?)
2) apply patch up to 9.2.0.5.0.
3) run a script to create all the users.
4) Do an import (schema by schema, currently we have 9 schemas), the db is tiny small (3.2 GB) OLTP nature.
5) Run a cold backup.

That sounds OK. I think I would modify it slightly by doing:

1) Install 9i Rel 2 (9.2.0.1.0) as a software-only installation.
2) Apply patch up to 9.2.0.5.0.
3) Create a new instance using the DBCA, but not using a template. Select a new database so the scripts are run from scratch.
4) run a script to create all the users.
5) Do an import (schema by schema, currently we have 9 schemas), the db is tiny small (3.2 GB) OLTP nature.
6) Run a cold backup.

Thanks a lot Tim!

I took your advice and I tried to install 9i Rel 2 (9.2.0.1.0) on Windows 2003 server.

1) When select Available Products, the 2nd choice seems more appropriate, it seems management server and OID are must. Correct?

2) Installation type, should I choose Oracle Mgt Server or customs?

3) If I select custom, should I check Oracle workflow, HTTP server, Ultra search media?

Attempted to apply patch and got the flow error:
"There are no patches that need to be applied from the patchset Oracle 9iR2 patch set 9.2.0.5.0"

When create database:
Should I choose the default character set?

For database connection option, should I choose share server mode since the db nature is for OLTP?

Hi Tim,

Please disregard my last question. Here's a new one:

I took your advice and installed the software only successfully. For the patch, it ran smoothly but encountered error at the end. However, I could see that the version had been upgraded from 9.2.0.1.0 to 9.2.0.5.0. Does it mean ok?

So now, I need to create a database at the command prompt:
C:\\>set ORACLE_SID=appdev
C:\\>echo $ORACLE_SID
appdev

C:\\>sqlplus "/ as sysdba"

Hi.

Make sure the listener service is started and use the DBCA to create an instance. I've never set the ORACLE_HOME environment variable under window.

One more question, During 9i Rel 2 installation, there is a page
Oracle Services for Microsfot Transaction Server
Port Number: 2030

Do we need this? How to handle this page?

Hi.

Leave it on the default value and carry on. When you are finished, if you are not going to use this feature turn off the Windows service associated with it.
